2010 Penn Nationals Team

Following a successful Mid-Atlantic Championship tournament, Penn headed off to Tuscon, AZ for their fifth consecutive Nationals tournament.  In the opening round, the team faced Boston College and although getting off to a slower start, the team rallied following at hat trick from Amanda Zwarenstein in the first half.  The team played pressed on with goals from Megan Calpin, co-captain Natasa Kordic, and Kathryn Nary to finish the game 6-4, guaranteeing them a top eight finish at the tournament.  With 8 saves in goal, co-captain Elizabeth Lawrence was named the Player of the Game.  In the next game, the Quakers faced UC Santa Cruz, a program that had been varsity until this year.  The score was 7-2 in favor of the Banana Slugs at the half  with two goals from Kordic, but the Penn team refused to give up to Santa Cruz with another goal from Kordic, two from Winnie Eastwood, and one each from Soleil Robert and Megan Calpin.  Despite the strong effort the Penn team lost 11-7, sending them to face UCLA in the next round, the second ranked team in the country.  Scoring first in the third game was Winnie Eastwood, setting the tone for the remainder of the half with a tie entering the third quarter of 4-4.  The UCLA team was able to gain the advantage in the game, and went on to win 16-7, but not without a fight from the Penn team with 5 goals from Eastwood, and one apiece from Kordic and Kris Miller.  In the final game of the tournament, Penn challenged the University of Central Florida to for 7th place.  Leading 5-1 at the half with goals from Eastwood, Kordic, and Nary, Penn focused on maintaining control of the game.  After a rally by UCF in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 5-5, Eastwood and Kordic drove in shots to win the final game of the season 7-5.  A hat trick from Eastwood and six saves in the cage from Lawrence earned them Co-Player of the Game honors.  Congrats to everyone on a great season, especially the graduating seniors and coach!!

After the Championships tournament, Elizabeth Lawrence ’10 and Natasa Kordic ’10 were named the named the Players of the Week for their strong performances.  Lawrence took down 27 saves over 3 games, with nine steals and four assists.  Kordic had eight steals and netted nine goals over the weekend, including four of the nine totaled by the team in the final game against Penn State for the title.  Check out the full article on the CWPA site!

Mid-Atlantic Champions 5 years in a row!!

The University of Pennsylvania won their 5th consecutive Mid-Atlantic Championship this weekend at UVA.  In the first game, the team faced Pitt for the fourth time this year and came out on top with 13-3.  Later that day, Penn played Richmond and held them to 15-5.  In the final game Sunday morning, although playing a close game up until the 3rd quarter with  score of 5-4, Penn scored 4 goals to finish out the game in the final quarter, winning the championship game 9-4 for their 56th consecutive league win.  Two weeks to Nationals in Arizona!

50th Consecutive Win and 4-0 at Penn State!

Following the first game of the weekend against Penn State, the team achieved their 50th consecutive win in the Mid-Atlantic Conference over the last five years!  After this game came wins against West Chester, Pitt, and Coast Guard, setting the Penn women up for a first place seed in the Championship tournament April 10th-11th at UVA.

Following a weekend of competition at JMU, the Penn Water Polo team finished with a 4-0 record as they work toward their fifth consecutive Mid-Atlantic title.  Winnie Eastwood was named the division’s POW for her 13 goals, as well as leading the team in steals and assists.
